Running gun blues

According to Freakonomics, the biggest positive impact on crime in America was giving women reproductive freedom. By making contraceptives and abortion legal, a generation of children that fit the criminal demographic were never born.

I believe that research was later abridged to incorporate some drug control factors, but in essentials the theory stands.

Yet, in 2012 politicians are still basing the fundamentals of their campaigns on whether they believe in the right to bear arms, their religious beliefs and their opinion on a woman's right to choose.

Isn't it time that the people aiming to lead the world moved on? There is something intrinsically wrong with the fact that in order for a leader to be appointed, he or she cannot simply say "these are the actual problems with our country, and this is how we tackle them", instead they have to continue to convince people to vote for them based on outdated issues, to secure funding to even contend based on outdated issues.

The ugliness in the world, the cancers, the rapes, the violence, the murder... surely the way to impact these problems is not related to these outdated issues. We shouldn't nominate a person to lead us based on their skin colour or who their father is.

What the world needs now, is (love, sweet love?) to invest in the future. Education which is free from religious bias, which does not foster prejudice regarding a person's ethnicity, gender or sexuality and instead will produce a generation of intelligent, competent and motivated individuals. If children were raised with an understanding of how their life choices contribute to the overall economy, then perhaps their life choices would be different. They would in turn make a better generation of parents and that legacy would be passed on to future generations.

And the things that harm the world - guns, drugs, poor healthcare systems, environmental issues, the frigging media... wouldn't it be wonderful if it were possible to channel the resources that go into producing guns into improving education and healthcare? If the companies producing and advertising useless cosmetics products channelled those resources into improving the environment? If the media stopped focusing their attention on invading the private lives of footballers and musicians, film and television personalities and politicians and the royal family and gave time to reporting not about sensationalised statistics and scandals, but actually producing responsible journalism, positive messages about women and parenthood and health and business and education and and gave us role models instead of Z-list celebrities famous because of their body parts.

I am sick of reading articles in the media which define people by their sexuality, ethnicity, religion. Which celebrates people who look a certain way but behave like utter imbeciles, rather than celebrating people who are trying to make the world a better place. I don't give a shit what fad diet or beauty product is doing the rounds - stop telling people that eating a grapefruit or using a moisturiser will make them thin, STOP MANUFACTURING AND ADVERTISING FAST FOOD AND COSMETICS AND TELL THEM TO EAT MORE VEGETABLES AND EXERCISE MORE.

I would love to take a red pen and go through a list of companies which advertise in magazines, on the radio and on television and ban their products and services and force them to go and do something more valuable instead.

I hate that I am bringing a child into a world full of ignorant people. I hate the thought of the influence the media and other people will have on my child. Because no matter how I raise him, he will still encounter these people at school, at work and be influenced by the fact that they don't share his views or beliefs. Something as simple as segregating the sexes with pink and blue has a bigger impact on them than people can possibly fathom. Stop the madness.

I want an improvement in the world's mental and physical health. I want people to be raised with an awareness of how important it is to eat healthily, exercise, be sexually and fiscally responsible, educated and work hard. I want love to be accepted as love, no matter what form it comes in.

A horrible, senseless tragedy occurred in Connecticut yesterday. 28 children and teachers were shot and what solutions are we hearing? Give teachers combat training and put a gun in every classroom for defence.

NO NO NO NO NO!!! You don't fight fire with fire. A fire is created by igniting a fuel - is it better to extinguish it with water, mourn the damage and pray it doesn't happen again? No, it's better to avoid the fire in the first place by taking away the fuel source, by taking away the ignition power, by taking away the oxygen in the atmosphere feeding it.
